DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Gastric Emptying

OVERVIEW
This test is designed to study the stomach’s emptying capability and speed.

Patient Preparation
Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night prior to the exam.

No barium studies a week prior to this exam.

The Scan
The patient eats one egg that we tag with a small amount of a radioisotope.

We place the patient on a table, place the camera over the stomach and watch the stomach empty for 90 minutes.

The egg poses no harmful risks to the patient.

When the 90-minute test is finished, the patient is free to go.

For patients who cannot eat eggs, we will substitute certain kinds of yogurt. This will need to be discussed and approved by the Nuclear Medicine department at the time of scheduling the study.
